Why Not Prioritising Your Health Is Damaging Your Success?

You have a goal, a dream and a vision that you want to achieve. You’re driven and motivated because you’re working hard and want to see success. That is incredible, well done. However, if your health has slipped down the pecking order in regards of priorities then this will be an issue as it could affect your success plan. Let me explain how.

Before you proceed reading I want you to know that I want you to be healthy and remain healthy, both through exercise and healthy eating. Why? Really, I don’t know the exact reason, I just know that I want you to take control and make a positive impact in your life.

Success! You're on the list.

I want you to imagine yourself in full flow. You’re working hard, you’re working efficiently and you’re well on your way to realising your vision and smashing your goals. You’ve been operating like this for a month or so now, but you can feel yourself starting to slip.

You’ve stopped going to the gym, you skip breakfast and grab a quick snack or burger from the shops for lunch. You start to feel lethargic, unable to operate as efficiently as you once was and slipping on your performance. This is happening because you are neglecting your health. I know because I’ve been there multiple times.

Throughout my career I become so engrossed in my work that I ignored my life. I neglected my health, both mental and physical. I stopped taking the time to be present with my girlfriend at the time (now wife), I stopped exercising and I stopped cooking the healthy food I enjoyed. When I neglected my life I realised that my work suffered.

This happened to me three or four times over a few years and I got to a point where I said to myself I can’t keep doing this. So I decided to put my life first. I did the research, I watched the videos, read the books and we all now know the benefits to performance that prioritising our health brings us.

I put my family first. I put my mental and physical health first. I put happiness and passion first. What happened? I saw greater success in my work, I saw an increase in money, stronger relationships and even started writing (for someone who was terrible at English in school I thought it was impossible) and even wrote a book!

Also, look at this way. You may not feel the immediate effects of an unhealthy, stressful or toxic lifestyle now whilst you focus on building your version of success, but what is the point if once you reach your goal you’re too unhealthy to enjoy it. And yes, you might say I’ll get fit and healthy then, which may work if your lucky. But, there’s an increased chance that many years of that toxic lifestyle could lead to an illness which either stops you enjoying your success, or cuts it short. You have to think; is it worth it?

So this is advice, prioritise your health now. Here are some examples:

  • Develop a fit and functional body through exercise and active stretching
  • Eat more nutrient rich foods and reduce eating out
  • Introduce more fruit and veggies into your diet
  • Practice mental calmness
  • Drink less alcohol and stop smoking
  • Develop your mental resilience

If you implement even half of these you will see a huge difference in your life.
