What are the top five capabilities that define future leadership?

This is an important question. It is important to understand that leadership has shifted over the years as leadership is no longer about skill, but is more about behaviours.

Take for example, how would you describe a leader as being professional? Would it be due to the way they dress, or would be to their effective decision making, ability to display empathy and listening to others? It would be the latter because these are behaviours which define a leader.

In answer to your question, the future of leadership would be defined by the following five behaviours:

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Confidence not ego
  3. Listening with empathy
  4. Being the compass through effective decision making
  5. Clear and concise communication

Self-awareness

It is essential that leaders grow. Whether they grow with their company or environment that they operate in. Leaders of the future need to be willing to understand where they are good and bad and adapt to the rapidly changing environment of today. In particular, those who lead large groups of people from diverse backgrounds, such as people spanning various age groups, will provide different challenges to the leader.

Confidence not ego

As leaders grow they gain more power. It is a leader’s duty to aim to make a positive impact for all. This is done by displaying confidence and leverage their power to benefit all to the best of the ability. The opposite of this is a leader who uses the power gained for manipulation and self-interest.

Listening with empathy

A saying I learnt a long time ago applies very well here: “People don’t leave companies, they leave bosses”. Far too long people’s needs have been ignored which leads to mental and physical health issues and eventually harms the leader. The world no longer needs apathetic leaders who are solely focused on their personal gain and ignore the wider impacts of their decisions.

By listening with empathy, leaders can understand the holistic needs of their environment and effectively decide what to do.

Being the compass through effective decision making

Often, the biggest frustration from people in their leader is a lack of direction. People are more than capable of doing their roles, but a lack of effective decisions provides barriers to their roles. A leader of the future can transform their environment through well thought out decision making.

Clear and concise communication

All of the above is useless without clear and concise communication. Communication is how humans have succeeded over the years with leaders excelling through being able to communication their vision and decisions. Without this, execution will be flawed. With this, a leader has a greater chance of success.
