How to view your growth?

Almost everyone views growth in the wrong way. This however, isn’t their fault. In this blog I will share with you how my view on growth has changed and why it would benefit you.

Throughout my life I have been very goal orientated. I would set myself a goal, achieve it and then think what next. What is next for me? What do I want? What do I need? Set the goal and achieve it. However, I was never really satisfied with achieving the goals; when I got my first promotion, when I bought my first property or when I completed my Masters. I set a goal and achieved it, but wasn’t truly excited as I felt that the goals were expected and bound to happen.

Success! You're on the list.

The older I got I started to focus more on personal growth and as I moved away from traditional education, I started to discover that I had been viewing growth entirely wrong. So far, I had been setting a goal, winning and then moving on and was never truly happy with the win. I had a goal winning mentality. I realised that this had come from the traditional education system of “winning” a test, or “winning” by getting a grade or “winning” by finishing school. This wasn’t working for me.

What I discovered changed everything for me. I discovered that growth is a journey. That I cannot win, that I am constantly evolving on the journey. For example, in my relationship with my wife. If we was to disagree on something and I “won” the discussion, I didn’t really win as I may have left her upset. When I set myself a career goal and I “won” the goal. I didn’t really win because I devoted too much time and energy into it. When I set myself a financial goal and “won” it, I didn’t really win because I sacrificed helping people and time spent with loved ones for it.

Here’s a short video to help you if you ever find yourself in a rut!

So this is my message to you. Don’t go through looking to “win” every goal as even when you win, you are sacrificing something that may be more important to you. Instead, understand that life is a journey, there is time and that your achievements are steps on the way to your bigger dream!
