How To Start Making An Impact As a Millennial?

Are you worried that you aren’t making an impact in the world? Are you anxious because you feel like you aren’t doing enough? Are you concerned because you don’t feel like you are making a difference? Being a millennial this is one the biggest problems we face today. We want to positively impact the world. How do I know? Apart from all the research, I am a millennial. I understand how it feels to feel worried, concerned and anxious. That’s why I wrote this blog, to explain how I overcame these issues.

Today, I understand how my actions can positively impact the world. I understand how my behaviours can transform a person life and positively impact their world, but it wasn’t always like this. Early on in my career I used to get frustrated because I felt as if I wanted to make change but wasn’t senior enough to do so. From the age of 22 to 24 I felt anxious because I wanted to make a difference in world but didn’t know how. That all changed recently when I attended a seminar and was coached on my train of thought. I was looking at the issue all wrong. I was so focused on the big picture that I was missing the incredible events happening around me. When I shifted my focus my anxiety was gone, I was no longer worried about how I could impact the world and I had a plan on how I was going to do it (side note: coaching is incredibly powerful!)

Success! You're on the list.

Your brain will look for whatever it is you are focusing on. Try it. Look around for blue items. How many red items did you see? Now try again and look for red items. How many red items did you see this time? More right? That’s how our brains work because they find what we focus on. So, if you are focusing too much on the big picture of the impact you want to make change this by shifting your focus. Focus on the small things that you can positively impact every day start small.

I know this probably isn’t what you want to hear, but unfortunately it’s the truth. There is no quick fix secret. Making a positively big impact starts with a lot of positively small impacts. In order to grow a large tree you still need to plant a small seed.

As always I will share the tool on how I did this. Remember, everything I share are tools that I’ve actually tried and done and what you can use in real life. The tool is simple:

Slow it down.

That’s it. Simple right. Slow everything right down and shift your focus from thinking about the big picture and focus on the things you can positively impact within your immediate sphere of influence. For example:

  • Focus on the conversation with your partner. Really listening to them and make them feel valued
  • Focus on listening and understanding the problems your team face and help them overcome those problems
  • Focus on how the small actions you do can impact the world, such as recycling
  • Focus on encouraging your friends and family to explore areas outside their comfort zone
  • Focus on investing in yourself to expand your mind
  • Focus on being grateful
  • Focus on how you can use your immediate skills to help others
